The class will have a thirty minute break before rejoining at 3pm for the screening segment of the class where we will show three short films, one by each of the presenting filmmakers.

Filmmaker bios:
Gabriela Ortega is an award-winning writer/director and actor born and raised in the Dominican Republic. She is a graduate of the University of Southern California’s BFA in acting program, a 2021-2022 Sundance Institute “Art of Practice” fellow and is currently based in Los Angeles.

Chica Barbosa is a Mexican-Brazilian filmmaker based in Los Angeles, US. Her work focuses on non-fiction cinema, experimental and hybrid narratives, addressing themes like immigration, colonization, displacement, LGBTQ+ rights, identity and faith as an act of resistance. She also directs branded content and music videos, always looking to work with a diverse crew behind and in front of the cameras.

Mariana is a Brazilian and Mexican writer/ playwright and actor, founder of El Cine, an organization that focuses on film education for the cost of a movie ticket. Mariana participated as a writer on the CBS Diversity program. She has acted in Telenovelas and TV Series, both in Mexico and the United States, she is a member of Tim Robbins’ theater ensemble “The Actors’ Gang” where she adapted and performed the story of Dolores Huerta in We Live On. Mariana wrote and starred in the festival short “Mariposa” that told the true story of “La Mataviejitas”. Mariana continues to develop and curate content, with a mission to tell inclusive stories that break cultural boundaries.
